From Plan to Build
Our Process
Start the Conversation
Reach out and tell us a little about your project. We’ll ask a few initial questions about the type of work you’re considering, your timeline, and whether you’re already working with an architect or designer. This helps us understand the scope of the project and whether it’s a good fit.
Project Review & Planning
If the project moves forward, we review the plans, site conditions, and construction goals in more detail. This stage focuses on aligning the design, construction approach, and general budget expectations so the project can move forward with a clear plan.
Pre-Construction Walkthoughs
Before major construction begins, we meet on-site to walk through the project in detail. This includes a framing walkthrough before mechanical work starts, giving you the opportunity to visualize the space and make important decisions early.
We also conduct an electrical and plumbing walkthrough, where you can:
- Place outlets and switches
- Choose lighting locations
- Adjust switch placement
- Set shower head heights and fixture positions
These walkthroughs are a key part of our process—giving you direct input and ensuring the finished space reflects how you actually want to live or work.
Construction
Once planning is complete, Sunstone manages the construction process from site preparation through the building phase. We coordinate scheduling, oversee trades, and maintain communication throughout the project to keep construction organized and moving forward.
Completion & Walkthrough
As construction wraps up, we walk through the project together and review the finished work. Final details are addressed so the space is ready for use and built to perform well for years to come.
The cost of building a custom home varies depending on the size of the home, level of finishes, site conditions, and architectural complexity. Mid- to high-end custom homes typically involve detailed design work and careful construction planning. Early conversations with the builder and design team help establish a realistic budget and construction approach.
It is often helpful to involve a builder early in the planning or design phase. Early collaboration helps align architectural plans with construction realities, budgeting, and scheduling. This approach can prevent costly revisions later in the process.
The timeline for a custom home depends on the size and complexity of the project as well as site conditions and permitting. Most custom homes involve a design and planning phase followed by the construction period itself. During early project discussions, builders can typically provide a general timeline based on the scope of work.
Not necessarily. Some homeowners begin working with a builder after architectural plans are completed, while others start the conversation earlier. Builders often collaborate closely with architects and designers, and early involvement can help guide planning, budgeting, and construction strategy.
Yes. Additions are a common way to expand living space and improve how a home functions. Projects may include new living areas, kitchen expansions, primary suite additions, or structural changes that reconfigure the existing layout.
Renovation timelines depend on the scope of work, structural requirements, and the age and condition of the existing home. Smaller renovations may take a few months, while larger projects involving structural work or major additions require more extensive planning and construction time.
Sunstone Builders focuses on small- to mid-scale commercial construction, including professional offices, medical and service-based businesses, studios, small retail environments, car dealerships, restaurants and hospitality spaces, and apartment or multifamily buildings. These projects often involve close coordination with owners, architects, and design teams to ensure the finished space is functional, efficient, and supports day-to-day operations.
Sunstone Builders primarily works on projects within Vermont and surrounding areas where the team can maintain strong oversight of construction and project coordination. Project locations are reviewed during early discussions to ensure the project is a good fit.
The best first step is reaching out to discuss the project idea, timeline, and general scope of work. Early conversations help determine whether the project is a good fit and allow the builder to outline the next steps in the planning process.
